Il avait oublié beaucoup de choses mais savait que cela reviendrait naturellement.

Il a réalisé que les Français parlent vite et qu'il est donc difficile de comprendre ce qu'ils disent.
He realized that French people are speaking fast and therefore it is difficult to understand what they say.
Donc parfois, il abandonnait et essayait de parler en Anglais.
So sometimes, he gave up and tried to speak in English.

Parfois, cela fonctionnait... mais pas toujours...
Sometimes it worked... but not always...
Cependant, Joe ne voulait pas abandonner, car il savait que c'était une étape importante du processus d'apprentissage.
However, Joe didn't want to give up because he knew it was an important step in the learning process.
D'ailleurs, les Français étaient toujours heureux de l'aider à apprendre le Français.
Besides, French people were always happy to help him learn French.
Et surtout... Il avait maintenant une nouvelle raison pour apprendre le Français plus activement : Angèle.
And more important... he now had a new reason to learn French more actively: Angèle.
Il voulait pouvoir parler de tout avec elle. De sa vie, ses projets, ses sentiments...
He wanted to talk about everything with her. His life, his projects, his feelings...
