Voilà meaning

Definition

“Voilà” is a French interjection which means “There it is!” / “There you go!” / “This is it!“. We use it to express satisfaction or to highlight an achievement. It basically creates drama when making an announcement or revealing something.

How to use it

Use it when you want to highlight something you just did, something you are happy with or proud of. Long story short: anything that deserves a little touch of drama…

  • Voilà, le dîner est prêt ! → There it is, dinner is ready!
  • Voilà, j’ai fini de ranger ma chambre ! → This is it, I’m done cleaning my room!
  • Voilà, j’avais encore raison ! → There it is, I was right again!
  • Voilà, tu aurais dû m’écouter ! → There you go, you should have listen to me!

We also use it sometimes with “Et” (And) as follows: “Et voila !” to make it even more theatrical.

  • Et voilà, tu as tout cassé ! → And there you go, you broke everything!
  • Et voilà, je suis le meilleur ! → And this is it, I’m the best!

N.B: We are here focusing on the famous use of “Voilà” as a preposition, but we can also use it in many different other cases in a sentence.

Funny stuff

It literally means “See there” because it comes from the words “Vois → see” and “là → there” but with it became just one word.

Synonyms and similarities

  • Et voilà → And there it is / And there you go / And this is it
  • Voici → There it is / There you go / This is it
  • Et voici → And there it is / And there you go / And this is it
